Computer Information Systems/Computer Science Instructor

The full-time instructor will be tasked with establishing a balance between academic rigor and practical application. The program will be supported by an active advisory committee. It is a priority to maintain college standards of professionalism, collegiality, record keeping and instruction within the appropriate department.

Description of Duties and tasks:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Teach a range of Computer Information Systems (CIS) and Computer Science (CS) classes in such areas as microcomputer concepts and applications, Linux and Windows operating systems, PC hardware and technical support, network design and management, programming, database concepts and design, wireless technologies and networking, and web technologies and networking.
2. Teach assigned classes, prepare, distribute, and utilize instructional support materials, including syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media, and other appropriate devices. Facilitate learning and interact with students in lecture, clinical, and small group settings.
3. Function as program lead. In cooperation with faculty, utilize competency based learning principles focused on both program and student outcomes reflected in assignments, testing criteria, teaching aids and reference materials. Develop accurate assessment measures that help students demonstrate proficiency. Evaluate and maintain records of student progress and provide feedback to students. Serve as role model for students,    including professional behavior. Provide academic advising to students, as outlined in the faculty bargaining agreement.
4. Incorporate current technology in classroom and lab; work with students of diverse backgrounds to fulfill their academic goals, work with students with disabilities or with other special learning situations on an as-needed basis, while demonstrating sensitivity to these needs.
5. Work with students through office hours and other setting to ensure course content is understood.  Collaborate with peers on campus and serve on campus committees as required in faculty bargaining agreement.
6. With the Dean, establish and follow a professional growth plan to maintain and expand knowledge of related field theory and practice. Actively participate in college sponsored professional growth activities, such as faculty in-service.
7. Communicate and work in a respectful, inclusive, and productive manner with diverse staff and students. Appropriately refer students who   may have difficulty in academic and/or personal areas.
8. Actively cultivate good relationships with local professionals in the field and participate in recruitment and retention efforts. Infuse curriculum with materials that reflect state of the art practice, evidence based literature and procedures, and express ideas through clear and precise written and verbal communication.
9. Follow safety procedures and maintain work area in a clean and orderly manner.
10. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Dean.

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Attend student graduation ceremony at the end of the academic year.
2. Attend conferences and professional meetings.
3. Serve on Faculty Senate committees, screening committees, and other ad hoc committees as requested and/or appointed

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

1. Knowledge and ability to instruct various audiences, both individuals and groups, taking into account various learning modalities and methods.
2. Knowledge of computers and ways to integrate appropriate technologies into the curriculum.
3. Ability to use instructional delivery methods which enhance a broad public access to post secondary education.
4. Ability to effectively communicate in English with others both orally and in written form, which includes the ability to restate at various language levels, to simplify, and to use demonstrations, which relate to previous knowledge and concrete experience.
5. Ability to use instructional delivery methods, which reflect an adult orientation.
6. Ability to work cooperatively with department members and members of the college community in meetings and on projects.
7. Ability to review, understand, apply and share concepts presented in training programs, conferences and/or professional literature.
8. Willingness to teach at various hours and as required.
9. Knowledge of non-traditional delivery strategies (especially individualized and distance learning) and formats for education (e.g. workshops, community discussion groups, etc.)
10. Ability to evaluate student progress both empirically and holistically and to prescribe and develop curriculum materials for individuals and classes.
11. Ability to motivate and inspire students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master's degree in Computer Science or closely related field

• Minimum of two (2) years' full-time experience or supervision in assigned field
• Demonstrated ability to teach both computer information systems and computer science

• Community college teaching experience
• Demonstrated success in a broad range of instructional delivery including computer enhanced instruction and distance delivery
• Industry experience demonstrating progressive responsibilities and duties.
• Demonstrated ability to program with computer languages such as C++, Java, SQL, etc.
• Industry certifications such as Cyber Security, A+, CCNA, MCSE, CIW, Oracle, etc.
• Experience in social networking, mobile device programming, and new media (XML, Ajax, ASP, PHP, etc.).
